On 18 September 2024, the Interreg VI-A Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro Programme held an exciting Interreg Cooperation Day in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. The event highlighted regional collaboration through various activities.
The day began with a visit to the Herceg Novi Fire Brigade, where attendees witnessed a joint demonstration exercise of the protection and rescue services of Herceg Novi, Konavle and Trebinje, showcasing their expertise in disaster preparedness—part of the “Flood & Fire” project, financed by Interreg IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina-Montenegro 2014-2020, which had bolstered local capacities to respond to natural and man-made disasters.
Following this, participants toured the Ivan Goran Kovačić Secondary School and attended a public lecture on European integration, fostering discussions on cross-border collaboration.
A key part of the event – joint bicycle ride with students along the historic Ćiro trail spotlighted the ĆIRO II project, financed by Interreg IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina-Montenegro 2014-2020 as well. This initiative aimed to strengthen and diversify the tourism offerings of Herzegovina, Dubrovnik-Neretva County, and Boka-Kotorska Bay by developing a joint tourism destination centered around the Old Narrow Gauge Railway ĆIRO. The ride symbolically connected the three countries, highlighting this years Interreg cooperation Day theme – “Cooperation Overcoming Borders.”
The event not only celebrated European cooperation but also offered participants a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the region’s interconnectedness, both in tourism and in collaborative resilience efforts.
