On 17 February 2025, the City of Trilj, in collaboration with the Institute for Protection and Ecology (IPERS) from Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the company Komunalno d.o.o. from Kotor, Montenegro, officially held the kick-off conference for the CircleAware project – “Driving Awareness and Accelerating the Circular Economy Transition”.

The project is being implemented as part of the Interreg VI-A IPA Cross-border Cooperation Program Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro, with a total budget of € 793.061,40, of which 85% is co-financed by the European Union (€ 674.102,19 from the IPA III CBC fund).

About the Project
The primary goal of this project is to improve waste separation infrastructure, educate the public, and raise awareness about the importance of the circular economy. Additionally, it aims to implement innovative digital solutions for tracking and ptimizing waste management.
The project also seeks to enhance citizen engagement in the waste separation and disposal process, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management system.

Key Activities and Benefits for Project Partners
Residents of Trilj will directly benefit from the project through the procurement of 1,000 multi-composters and 500 containers for separate collection of bio-waste, significantly reducing the amount of municipal waste sent to landfills.
Furthermore, with the acquisition of a new municipal waste collection vehicle, the City of Trilj will improve the quality of municipal and bio-waste disposal services, facilitating the transition to a circular economy.
A key objective of the project is also the digitalization of waste management services, which will provide better public awareness, system efficiency tracking, and cost optimization.
Additionally, the Institute for Protection and Ecology (IPERS) will receive three multi-compartment bins and three composters, while Komunalno Kotor d.o.o. will procure 60 containers (1,100L capacity) and a waste collection vehicle.

Beyond equipment procurement, the partners aim to raise public awareness of sustainable waste management practices. As part of these efforts, several cross-border activities will be organized:
• A study visit to the recycling center in Trilj
• A two-day training session on the circular economy for public officials in Banja Luka
• A two-day cross-border visit to a composting facility in Kotor

To engage children and youth in the sustainable waste separation process, Komunalno Kotor d.o.o. will organize an eco-competition for primary and secondary schools. Meanwhile, the City of Trilj and IPERS will hold educational programs and recycling workshops in primary schools.
