Murals that clean the air and promote sustainability: Tuzla receives three artworks under the SINERGY project

As part of the international project Sport Facilities Green Energy – SINERGY, funded by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A IPA Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027 programme, the City of Tuzla has received three murals with strong environmental messages, created by visual artist Ljubomir Todorović.

These murals are not only visually appealing works of art—they also serve as air purifiers. They were painted with special BOYSEN KNOxOUT paints, which break down harmful air particles (NOx, SOx, VOC), providing an annual air purification effect equivalent to that of about one hundred mature trees. This demonstrates SINERGY’s commitment to sustainable development, not only through infrastructure and education but also through artistic interventions in public space.

🎨 Mural 1: “The Swing of Life” – SKPC Mejdan
The first mural is painted on the wall of SKPC Mejdan, covering 12 m². Titled “The Swing of Life,” it depicts an old car tire transformed into a children’s swing, from which sunflowers and wind turbines grow. This symbolism of repurposing, recycling, and growth reflects the core goals of the SINERGY project—shifting from polluting habits to sustainable solutions in sports facilities and local communities.

🌻 Murals 2 and 3: “Sunflower Alley” – Atik Mahala
The second and third murals face each other in Atik Mahala, near Freedom Square—on the façades of the BIT Center and the Chamber of Commerce of Tuzla. The common motif of the sunflower as a symbol of renewable energy and transformation gives this location the symbolic name “Sunflower Alley.”

  • The mural on the BIT Center (55 m²) shows two hands disintegrating into coal dust, reaching toward a large sunflower whose petals are shaped like wind turbine blades.
  • The mural on the Chamber of Commerce (40 m²) shows a hand, also crumbling into pieces of coal, supporting the stem of a green sunflower—a symbol of taking responsibility and supporting sustainable development.

Together, the murals create a powerful visual dialogue between the old energy paradigm and the green transition, which is the essence of the SINERGY project.

💡 Art as a tool for change
The entire mural project lasted 12 working days and was implemented with the technical and logistical support of a team responsible for safety, documentation, and production. A total of 107 m² was painted, and the works received a very positive reaction from citizens—many stopped, took photos, and inquired about their meaning.

“These murals are not just images on walls—they are messages. They speak of transformation, the need to embrace renewable energy sources, and to do it together—through everyday choices and collective projects,” said artist Ljubomir Todorović.

These visual narratives perfectly complement the main goals of the SINERGY project: improving energy efficiency in sports facilities, promoting renewable energy sources, and engaging the community through education and innovative approaches.
