The second scientific Chestnut conference named as a “Develop of Institutional mechanism in function of Chestnut forests protection” held on 29 March 2018 in Bužim. The conference gathered huge number of Eminent professionals from Bihac region, Executive and Legislative representatives of Una – Sana canton, as well as the other scientific workers, association’s and chamber’s representatives from agriculture field.
The Chestnut as one of the most important natural resources in this region came up into attention in the past few Years because of the Chestnut Gall Wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) and Chestnut bark cancer. Attention gathered Scientific workers as well, regarding to the damages and diseases of this pathogen in the Chestnut forests. Even though, the Chestnut importance has been for the past Years well recognized, nothing is done to preserve and protect Chestnut forests and to source all of its benefits as a natural and economical potentiality. The Host and promoter was Municipality of Bužim and solemnly was opened by Municipality Major Mr. Zikrija Duraković.
Chestnut Gall Wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) is the biggest pathogen of Sweet Chestnut which systematically destroys Chestnut Forests in the Una – Sana canton. Its protection and breeding were the hot spot of the interest in the relevant institutions and academic communities. Yesterday that was presented on the Second Chestnut Conference with topic: “Develop of Institutional mechanism in function of Chestnut forests protection” which is support of the Europe Union INTERREG IPA cross border program Croatia – Bosnia and Hercegovina – Monte Negro 2014 – 2020.
Along this conference through this project is planned to build the Chestnut plantation. Experts worked on the field of Chestnut protection, yesterday gave their support and offer solutions that can be applies on the field with the main goal on Chestnut protection. From total Chestnut forests in the Bosnia and Hercegovina 90% naturally growing in the Una – Sana canton and it is main source for the many of household incomes but after all Sweet Chestnut become a endangered species.
Chestnut Gall Wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) made a very huge damages. Chestnut forests start to drying and the incomes are importantly reduced. Applying positive practices from Croatia, which adequately responded to this pest, is also striving for a European cross-border cooperation project. The project participants highlighted the numerous benefits. With the main goal of the Chestnut protection among the relevant institution, academic community is included as well. In this project It is predicted the biological perseveration using the natural enemy of the Chestnut Gall Wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) by importing the parasitoid on two localities in the Una – Sana canton: Velika Kladuša and Bužim. Comparable to these activities it is also planned the Chestnut plantation which will be build up for the experimental purposes and that way can be defined conclusions and enriched the knowledge on this topic.
