In a majority of cases in Croatia’s, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s and Montenegro’s part of the Programme area, there isn’t enough information on how and when to detect melanoma or how to treat it using modern means. Early detected melanoma has high chances of survival (95% cured), while melanoma detected late has fatal prognosis (median survival 6 to 9 months). Furthermore, in the aforementioned area no national registers of patients with melanoma exist nor does equipment or methods of treating melanoma respond entirely to actual needs. The project plans to respond to this challenge and raise public awareness of melanoma by organizing informative days and awareness campaigns. A network of Health Experts and an e-health platform will be established in the cross border area in order to educate professionals on new methods of treatment and modern insights on treating melanoma. New equipment will be procured for educational and medical activities as well, with the main objective of the MELAdetect project to raise awareness for early detection of ocular, skin and mucosal melanoma.
The project’s lead partner, Institute of Public Health Zadar (CRO), will organize and implement workshops and info days to raise awareness on melanoma. The partner will develop the e-health tool and communicate project results, among other activities as part of the project.
University of Zadar (CRO) will acquire new equipment, such as the dermatoscope and indirect ophthalmoscope, and use it in educating target groups and diagnostic examinations. The partner will also contribute in creating the knowledge platform.
Zadar County Development Agency ZADRA NOVA (CRO) will focus their activities on drafting the Action plan for early detection and prevention of melanoma in project area.
Faculty of Medicine at the University of Mostar (BA) will address activities throughout the cross-border area in Bosnia and Herzegovina, such as organising workshops, info days and symposium for raising awareness, acquiring equipment to be used in diagnostic activities and contributing to the knowledge platform.
General Hospital “Blažo Orlandić” Bar (MNE) will cover project activities in the Montenegrin part of the cross-border area, specifically raising awareness activities, acquiring equipment and implementing a pilot project in order to improve accessibility and effectiveness to health services.
