On 17 February 2023, the Becharac Museum was officially opened in Pleternica which construction was, among other sources, co-financed through Interreg IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2014-2020, within the project Becharac & Ganga – Cultural route of Becharac & Ganga.
Promotion of cultural tourism and sustainable cultural development by discovering the rich and diverse cultural and natural heritage and history of the cross-border region of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina has been a starting point for Pleternica and Tomislavgrad to set up an innovative project idea dealing with regional folk songs that are even protected by UNESCO – Bećarac and Ganga.
This theme is associated with the unique pattern of folklore and constitutes not only a rich cultural heritage but also an immaterial reminder of the behavior (including culinary activities, craftwork etc.) of the “Bećarac and Ganga society” that was popular throughout the history of these communities.
The cultural route was aimed to make this cultural heritage more accessible to citizens and the general public by promoting a dynamic image of this heritage, which includes the construction of new city squares Bećarac and Ganga (with new museum building) and the development of new cross-border tourist facilities products. Partners from Pleternica and Tomislavgrad have protected the names “Becharac Museum” in Pleternica and “Ganga Museum” in Tomislavgrad as intellectual property.
One of the project’s activities was making a documentary film which partners submitted to several international film festivals. One of them was the Global India International Film Festival where the “Cultural route of Becharac & Ganga” won the best documentary film award.
