The RACE 2 project officially ended with a final conference held in Mostar on Friday, July 17 2026, marking the successful completion of an initiative through which the Mostar Health Centre, the Institute for urgent medicine of Zagreb County, and the Institute for emergency medical care of Montenegro significantly strengthened emergency medical services across the region.
With a total budget of €1.93 million, the project enabled the procurement of ambulances, advanced medical and IT equipment, and delivery of specialised education for healthcare professionals. Training was also provided to first responders who are often the first on the scene of life-threatening emergencies, including police officers, firefighters and mountain rescue personnel.
Across all three partner countries, a series of public health events featuring preventive health screenings was organised for the citizens. The project also enhanced the operation of emergency medical dispatch centres and improved protocols to ensure faster and more effective responses to medical emergencies.
At the closing conference, the project partners highlighted that RACE 2 is not only an example of a successfully implemented project, but also a reflection of the strong partnership established during the previous EU programming period, providing a solid foundation for future joint initiatives. The exchange of knowledge and expertise was the project’s greatest added value. RACE 2 has demonstrated how cross-border cooperation can play a vital role in advancing emergency medical services and improving the quality of care for citizens throughout the region.
