Our ClimBeach project is carrying out fieldwork at selected pilot locations along the coasts of Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina to better understand coastal processes and support the development of sustainable climate change adaptation measures.
The fieldwork focuses on beach morphology, sediment movement and the effects of wave action and other coastal processes. Through beach-profile measurements, on-site observations and photographic documentation, project partners are collecting data to monitor coastal changes and assess the resilience of different coastal areas.
Fieldwork has provided valuable insights into the processes affecting the selected beaches:
- Pizana Beach, Budva, Montenegro: Observations focused on wave exposure and intensive seasonal use, while the proximity of the Old Town limits the space available for natural beach development.
- Ričardova Glava, Budva, Montenegro: Fieldwork documented changes in the coastal zone, local impacts on coastal infrastructure and the movement and redistribution of gravel.
- Trstenica Beach, Pelješac, Croatia: Observations revealed sediment transported onto the promenade by wave action, while flash-flood flows contribute additional sediment to the beach. Nearshore geological formations may also influence wave breaking and local beach stability. Photographic documentation further helps track seasonal changes and erosion of the beach profile.
- Pilot locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Vučine: Beach profiles were surveyed to document beach morphology and seasonal conditions, establishing a basis for monitoring changes over time.
By combining field observations, systematic beach-profile measurements and photographic records, our ClimBeach project is building a better understanding of the processes shaping coastal areas across the programme region.
The collected data will contribute to the assessment of coastal resilience and support the development of sustainable climate change adaptation measures tailored to the specific characteristics of individual coastal locations.
Through this work, our project is strengthening the knowledge base needed to better understand coastal changes and support more informed approaches to protecting vulnerable coastal areas.
