The City of Bihać has completed a series of renewable energy and energy efficiency investments worth approximately EUR 172,000 under the SMART DeCARB – Smart Sector Coupling for Decarbonisation of Public Buildings project, marking another step towards a more sustainable and low-carbon future.

The investments were implemented with the support of the Interreg VI-A IPA Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027 Programme and focus on reducing energy consumption, increasing the use of renewable energy sources, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions in public infrastructure.

As part of the project, the City installed:

  • a 30 kW solar photovoltaic power plant,
  • a 30 kW electric vehicle charging station,
  • a smart solar bench equipped with charging facilities for mobile phones, tablets, electric bicycles, and e-scooters,
  • a 150 kW heat pump to modernise the central heating system, and
  • an energy efficiency monitoring system.

The newly installed photovoltaic power plant will generate clean electricity for the City Administration building, reducing both energy costs and reliance on conventional power sources. The heat pump will improve the efficiency of the building’s heating system, while the monitoring system will provide continuous data on energy consumption, enabling the City to assess the effectiveness of its energy efficiency measures and identify further opportunities for savings.

The investment also strengthens Bihać’s sustainable mobility infrastructure. The electric vehicle charging station and smart solar bench promote the use of clean transport solutions while demonstrating how renewable energy technologies can be integrated into everyday urban life.

By completing these investments, the City of Bihać reinforces its commitment to improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting the objectives of the European green transition. The project delivers tangible environmental and economic benefits while enhancing the quality and sustainability of public services.

SMART DeCARB also aims to strengthen the capacity of local authorities to plan and implement decarbonisation measures. Bringing together partners from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, the project showcases the value of cross-border cooperation in accelerating the decarbonisation of public buildings and building more resilient, energy-efficient, and climate-responsible communities across the Programme area.
